The Embassy of the Republic of Mozambique to the Holy See informs, with deep sorrow and a spirit of solidarity, that His Excellency the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Daniel Francisco Chapo, accompanied by Her Excellency the First Lady, Gueta Chapo, and His Excellency Mateus Saize, Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs, took part in the funeral of Pope Francis, held in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City, on 26 April 2025.
The presence of the Mozambican Head of State at this moment of mourning and reflection expresses, on behalf of the people and Government of Mozambique, the sincerest tribute to the legacy of Pope Francis — a spiritual leader who deeply marked the history of the Catholic Church and the contemporary world through his tireless defense of human dignity, social justice, peace, and care for creation.
During his pontificate, Pope Francis cultivated a relationship of closeness with Mozambique, most notably through his apostolic visit in September 2019. That visit remains alive in the collective memory of the nation as a sign of encouragement for reconciliation, dialogue, and the building of a common future founded on fraternity.
Speaking to the press, the Head of State highlighted the deep bond of friendship between the late Pontiff and the Mozambican people, emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting the values of peace, reconciliation, and love for one another as advocated by the Holy Father.
Mozambique thus pays tribute to a humble and courageous Shepherd, whose words and witness will continue to inspire generations across the world.
